Nike Commercial

No photos allowed on set, so nothing to show other than the bruises lol! Getting to this point was a pretty length process! First was the initial casting call where all they did was have us pretend to kick a soccer ball while they took a photo – so obviously it was all about the look. The call was for high school soccer players, so I was pretty surprise I got past this part.

The after that, I got put on hold for the shoot date and had to fill out a questionnaire about my playing experience and if I was in college or playing in college as apparently, if you were to do this commercial, you would basically be being paid to play, meaning that you would no longer be able to play NCAA sports. After the questions I got a call for the callbacks. Here is where I actually had to show that I knew how to play.

I’ve played soccer for almost all my life, but I’ve never been particularly good at “tricks”. I never use them in a game, so never thought it would be useful to learn them. Once of the girls who did her callback before me was AMAZING at tricks – specifically juggling. She could do hacky-sack tricks, but with a soccer ball. I was so impressed, I felt like I might as well just go home right then and there. But since they were looking for 10-15 girls, decided to stay – even if she had 1 spot, there were still others available for the rest of us So I did the call back – did the hardest move I know (the Maradona) and that was it. I left again certain that I wasn’t going to get it.

Then I got a call once again putting me on hold for the commercial. And a few days after, while at the film festival in San Francisco, got the official confirmation that I was booked.

The whole shoot went really smoothly. They broke all 10 girls into two teams – the hero team and the defending team – and I got places on the defending team whose job it was to make the hero team look good. And with 3 semi-pro players on the hero team, that wasn’t hard! Then they had us go through a whole bunch of drills and soccer scenarios to make it look like we were playing. For the most part the hero team was featured, but I think there were two shots that I might have gotten heavily featured in – slide tackling and one-on-one competing for the ball.

Regardless, it was a fun experience and my first “big” commercial, so lots to learn from going through it!

Super excited about booking a Nike commercial! All those years of playing soccer have paid off! It’s not a national commercial – web only, but still my first “big brand” commercial!

San Francisco Indie Film Fest

Since San Fran is only a 6-7 hour drive from LA, Michael, Alex and myself along with tow of our new friends, Donnie and Sara, went up for the screening of The Disco Exorcist. We arrived just in time for the showing on Saturday. The audience reaction to the film was great – laughs, claps, gasps And I even think I had a fan as there was an extra “whoot” for my name in the opening credits haha! We stayed for a Q&A after the showing and mostly people were completely amazing that this film was made on such a small budget. Of course the questions of unions came up and we also gave out some business cards after.

For the rest of the weekend, we were tourists around San Fran! We went to Zeightgiest – a really awesome bar not too far from the theater (it was here I first learned that I had booked the Nike commercial!) and then back to the hotel afterwards. Since there were 5 of us, we got a suite at the hotel – I could not image if we had not. Even for a suite that room was small! I had forgotten how expensive real estate can be in cities like that. We finished the night by getting dinner and then coming back and playing some card games.

The next day we got a great breakfast at a cafe down the street before doing to an interview about the film for The Phillip Siddiq Show. The interview was great – short and sweet and Phillip were really prepared and excited about the film. I’ll let you know when the interview is out!

The we went to the Golden Gate Bridge for some site seeing and then over to Pier 39 for some dinner before stopping be the theater to introduce the Sunday night showing of the films and taking off and heading back home to LA. Really fun trip with some really good friends!

Trojan Women

Finally had our last show of Trojan Women – after a 5 week run with 4 shows a week, it’s been a long one! Can’t really say I’d sad it’s over, all though I will miss some of the girls – it’s a really draining show and to do it four times a week, plus the time commitment was taxing, all though, like every play I do, I’m glad I did it

It was a first for a lot of things – my first Greek Tragedy and also my first time to actually cry real tears during a performance. If you’ve read some of my other blogs, then you know that this is a “thing” for me. So this show was a step in the right direction. It helped me to learn a few things where this is concerned, such as, I can cry when I think that no one is looking at me. If I’m the center of the scene and all eyes are fixed on me, then no matter how much I feel like it, the tears just won’t come.

I thought that after crying in front of a live audience 4 nights a week that this would be able to transfer over to film as well, but due to that reason I just mentioned… apparently not. I had an audition during the show that I did really well in – all except for one thing. The note from the director was that I was hitting all of the beats perfectly, however not going deep enough with them – that everything was too much on the surface. And he was right. The scene called for tears and I couldn’t give him tears. I felt it, it hurt, and as soon as I walked out of that casting room I burst into tears, but I just couldn’t do it in front of them. I guess the show didn’t really solve anything, but at the very least, it showed me that I can do it – I just still need to work on it.

Anyway- back to the play. I was really really floored by some of the actors in this show. In particular the lead Alla – she is really truly an amazing actor. The emotional depth that she brought to the show night after night was just inspiring. Then Josephine – not only did she make such wonderful big bold choices, but she was constantly changing them. She reminded all of us that theater is a living thing, not bound to be done “one way” and that we should always be exploring. Her commitment and dedication to her role was so wonderful to watch. And Constance – completely free of spirit and mind – she gave me so much to aspire towards. A wonderful actor with great choices, depth, and a gravitating presence. I learned so much from each one of them.

San Francisco Indie Film Fest

Disco has been accepted into the San Francisco Indie Film Fest! It will have two showings at the festival in Febuary and since it’s only about a 7 hour drive from LA, guess whose going to be there!

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

Another year gone, and a new one lays ahead. Time to review what’s been done and set new goals for 2012!

Three big things for me in 2011 was of course the move to LA, getting an agent, and then also working on the film Exhumed, which I think it the best work that I have done to date. While it wasn’t my most prolific year since I spent 2 months traveling across the country and going on a long-awaited honeymoon to Fiji, I’ve finally made it to LA, which is a big step in so many respects. Here is a recap of the projects I worked on in 2011 and where they currently stand in the production process:

Now, time to review the goals I set up last year and see how I did!

Get “the one” headshot – I did finally get a headshot I love thanks to Timberwolf Photography, but sadly, this is a hunt that I think will never end as there are still some “holes” that I think I need to fill as far as photos.
Put together a new and revised reel – Did this. All though, there is some really great pieces I’ve worked on since and once I get footage from them, I will have a completely new and much better reel – just a waiting game at this point.
Get an agent and manager – Half done. Got an agent, now need a manager.
Start branching out into other regions – I really tried at this and had some great auditions in NJ, Michigan, and Arkansas, but two of those projects fell through and I had to drop out of the third.
Start and keep up with P90X work out program – Hmm… didn’t do so well with this one. I’ve actually started doing it much more now here in LA than back home!
Do another play – Done – twice!
Nail a challenging role – Done with Exhumed – a very very challenging role and I am so pleased with the entire film and how everything came out.
Finish my short film – Done!
Make more websites – Done! I made a few others for more friends and am currently working on two more.

And now for the goals of 2012, being in a new region, I feel a lot like I’m starting all over again, so in some ways, I have to move backwards a little in order to go forwards:

Get a manager – There has been some interest from a few, but am still looking for that perfect fit.
Get a small guest star spot on a TV show
Get a leading role in an indie feature
Get a “dream” role and nail it
Get some Equity points – Even though film is where my main interests lie, this is the only union that I’m really interested in joining because, to me, it’s the only one that really “means something”. Joining Equity is so much harder than SAG or AFTRA and if you can earn your way into Equity, it’s truly a stamp of being a good actor.
Learn to pole dance - I have a friend who does this and it looks like so much fun and a great work out, I really want to give it a shot!
Do more fun/ outdoorsy things – I find I spend way too much time here in front of my computer and there are so many other things out in the world that I want to do. I’ve joined a for-fun soccer team that will hopefully at least get me started with doing this!
