Getting Fit On A Budget: Reviews of LA Exercise Classes

March1

One part of our craft as actors is to look the part for the roles that we can play. Now this doesn’t always mean being beautiful and chiseled – some people are better as “the creepy guy” and keep themselves waif-like, or “the funny fat guy” whose entire career is dependent on them keeping those extra pounds. For me, I don’t really fit into either of this, so for me, being fit is an important part of “the package”.

Should I Join SAG-AFTRA?

February7

sarah nicklinTo join SAG or to remain non-union? That is the question.

This is something I’ve been considering very seriously recently. As anyone who knows me or has read any of my other posts, I have been very proudly non-union for a long time, even though I’ve been eligible to join for around 5 years now. I’m at the point where I think being non-union might actually be a hindrance to me.

Blogs by Actors for Actors

November15

Overall, a large part of what I’m trying to do with my blog here is, yes, self promotion and also giving some more in-depth info on the things I’m working on, but also, I want to help other actors. Learning the ins and outs of the industry takes a long time. I’m no expert, but I know a hell of a lot more than I did when I was first starting, and as I learn, I like to try to share my knowledge so that another actor who doesn’t know this info might want to learn about it too. My category for “the business of acting” is really all about sharing any knowledge that I get that I think might be helpful for other actors.

What to Expect From an Intensive at Margie Haber Studio

June24

First let me preface all of this by saying that I am not one of those people who thinks that “you should always be training”. I’m generally a bit skeptical when it comes to acting classes since I think that sometimes they can do more harm than good and often are a waste of money if you’re only there “just to be there” or “just to put it on your resume” and not because you have something that you really need to work on or feel like you’ve hit a wall and need a boost. I am even harder on the “name” acting schools because a personal pet peeve of mine is that I hate that if someone see that name on your resume, they will take you more seriously – just because you go to a good school, does not make you a good actor and does not mean that you take it any more seriously than another actor who can’t afford that school – and it really bothers me when people think that and use just the fact of having a name on a resume as a benchmark for talent.

Getting down off my soapbox now…. I don’t have enough good things to say about my experience here – seriously, they are fantastic!

Classification of Roles on a Resume (Revised)

June6

I wanted to add a quick post to update what I previously wrote in this blog about how roles are classified on a resume because I’ve learned more and my previous post isn’t completely correct. Plus I see a lot of people coming to my site searching for that info, so hopefully this will help give some answers! And if you see that I’m giving out some wrong info here, please correct me!

5 Pieces of Advise for Actors

April15

An interesting thing has been happening recently… I’ve had several actors approaching me and asking for advise on their careers. I find this to be a very interested phenomenon because I feel like I am in no way in a place to be giving advise – I’m still figuring this all out for myself! But none the less, this got me thinking, so I’ve put together my top 5 pieces of advice for actors that were either told to me, or they I’ve figured out along the way. These are not regarding technique or anything to do with skill, these are all about the business/career side of it since I am in no way an acting coach:

Am I Good Enough?

December2

I have tracking information on my website to see who is visiting, where they are located, what pages they look at ect. One of the search terms that was recently used to get to my site was the phrase “am I good enough?” This is of course something that every actor who I know has asked themselves at least once. But the truth of it all is — it doesn’t matter.

Where to start….. I had such a great time during these productions it’s hard to really pick out specific moments. I don’t think I’ve worked on two productions that overlapped like these did. The majority of the cast of Normal were going to be rehearsing the two days before shooting started, however I was set to shoot Debeaked during those two days…. so I went to RI for rehearsal for Normal the two days before everyone else and did a separate rehearsal since most of my scenes are only with a few actors, then went to Chicago to shoot Debeaked for two days, and then back to RI to start shooting Normal… made me think I really need to look into some sort of frequent flier program! Hello from Texas!! I am officially wrapped on the feature The Fetish Set. I spent most of this film either with only one eye as I get pretty beaten up and get this awesome swollen eye prosthetic, or in a little girl outfit with pigtails. This is the first film of a 3-part series, that will hopefully get made depending on the success of this first one – so when it comes out you have to watch it! :)

sarah nicklin seducing collisionsOne of the quickest shoots I’ve been on – finished a feature in I think it was 8 days (non consecutive). The film is very stylized and dialogue heavy. Think A Clockwork Orange meets Clerks, only the focus is more on sexual comedy than stoner comedy or violence. (more…)

Wrapped on a small part in a feature and a short. While working on Alice D on the east coast, I was lucky enough to be able to squeeze in two other projects while being there. (more…)

I am wrapped on the feature film Alice D, the next film from by Jessica Sonneborn and Kristina Page, starring Al Snow and Kane Hodder.

Love, love, loved being on this set!! The best part of course was that I got to spend over a week with Michael again since he had been out of town for over a month at this point working on The Inhabitants. Everyone was living together in this amazing mansion in Barrington RI for the duration of the shoot and it was a blast! Most of the cast and crew knew each other (all though there were some new faces too), either from other projects, or just from having mutual friends, so it was great to see so many of these wonderful people again, and back in my old state of RI no less! We even ended up randomly bumping into our very good and talented friend Michael Thurber one night at the mall while looking for some clothes for costuming, and some of my friends from home such as William Decoff has parts in the film, so it was great to see him and his son Timmy and all my other awesome friends who came out to be extras!
